JAKARTA -China has been accused of extensive espionage against Australia. This allegation was conveyed by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense Australia Dennis Richardson, Friday (05/12/2017). This accusation is rare, given Beijing is Canberra's biggest trading partner.

According to Richardson, Chinese authorities are spying on Australia like the speculations of analysts last night. However, government officials in Canberra always avoid public complaints related to Beijing espionage. "It's no secret that China is very active in intelligence activities aimed at us. It's more than a cyber attack, "Richardson said in a speech in Canberra.

China's espionage action in Australia is suspected to begin in 2015, where Chinese companies with close ties to the military hire a commercial port in the northern city of Darwin.

The rental deal prompted a backlash against the security implications of Australia. United States as an ally of Australia even had to reprimand Canberra. Since then, Australia has blocked some of the important infrastructure offerings made by Chinese companies. However, the reason for the rejection of the offer was never revealed to the public.

Richardson said that Chinese spy is a major factor in the Beijing government's decision. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang claimed not to know about Richardson's comments. According to him, China prefers to see Australian officials working to improve cooperation with Beijing.

"We hope that relevant people on the Australian side can say more things that can benefit the development of China-Australia relations, do more to gain profits in deepening cooperation, and not make irresponsible comments," Geng said. Quoted by Reuters.
