WWIII - A sophisticated Chinese spy ship lurks the largest international war exercise held by the United States (US) and Australia in Queensland. US military officials call it an unusual surveillance.

In recent weeks, Chinese spy boats are reported to have roamed off the coast of Alaska, Guam, India, and now similar vessels are off the coast of Queensland. The Australian Defense Department confirmed to ABC News on Saturday (22/7/2017) that Chinese spy boats had been roaming in international waters, monitoring, intercepting communications, radar signals and movements.

The war games titled "Operation Talisman Saber (TS17)" have started since last week and lasted for ten days. This massive maneuver reportedly involved about 30,000 combined troops of both countries.

TS17 is a joint exercise of the navy, air and ground that is intended to test and develop the interoperability of Australian and US forces. The exercise also became the first chance one of Australia's new submarines, HMAS Camberra, was involved in a high intensity event.

"Chinese vessels remain outside Australia's territorial waters but are within Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone in the Coral Sea," said the Australian Department of Defense. "The presence of the vessel has not affected the goal of the exercise," the department continued.

The vessel is reportedly the Auxiliary General Intelligence (AGI) Type 815 Dongdiao-class Navy ship of the People's Liberation Army. The ship is listed as one of the newest spy boats and one of the most advanced ships in the world.

Euan Graham, an expert from The Lowy Institute told ABC News that the presence of the vessel has the potential to become a provocation.

"Currently what we are seeing is a double standard in which China chose the favored 'Law of the Sea' region and refused to implement what it is not," Graham said.
